The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is the largest engineering competition in Canada. The first race was held in Red Deer in 1975, with the University of Calgary as one of the 4 competing teams. Since then, the competition has grown exponentially and there is now close to 20 Universities that compete annually. The competition rotates locations each year, giving each University an opportunity to host the extraordinary event.
GNCTR is more than a competition; it’s a Canadian engineering tradition.
What is GNCTR?
The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race is a 4 day long competition that challenges student’s technical and practical skills. There are a few basic rules for the toboggan design: the running surface must be made entirely of concrete, there must be a fully functioning steering and breaking system, there must be a safety roll bar, it must weigh less than 300 lbs, and carry 5 team members down the hill.
Each University is eligible to send a team of up to 30 members to compete in the event. The 39th annual competition will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia in January, 2013. The competition allows students to work in a team environment, network with other students, and develop pride for their work.
Teams are awarded points based on strict criteria that include: the technical exhibition display, the toboggan performance, the technical report, the toboggan design and team spirit.
Why Sponsor GNCTR?
The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race is a non-profit event that is run by volunteers. Throughout the year the team does several fundraisers including bottle drives and selling cookie dough. However, with the large expenses, achieving our financial goals is a daunting task that would be unattainable without corporate support. Sponsorship funding will go towards materials and travel costs. It gives the students the opportunity to meet engineers from across Canada and put their technical knowledge to the test. Without the support from generous sponsors, the U of C team would not be able to compete in this competition.
Each year there are over 400 young engineering students in attendance and numerous media outlets that cover the event. GNCTR has been featured on The Rick Mercer Report, Daily Planet, CBC News, Global News and the Travel Channel to name a few. The technical exhibition and race day are open to the public to come and cheer on their favorite team. As a corporate sponsor this is a great opportunity to advertise to an up and coming audience.
